A global index gives Indonesia's stock market until November

Bad for Indonesia downgrade threat looms over stock market

A powerful company that decides how the world's investors label stock markets has put Indonesia on notice. MSCI, which sorts markets into groups that guide where big funds put their money, has extended its review of Indonesia's "Emerging Market" status until November 2026. Writing in The Diplomat, Sebastian Strangio explains that MSCI first warned of a possible downgrade in January, worried about how open and transparent the market really is.

The stakes are large. If MSCI decides Indonesia has not done enough by November, it could move the country down from "Emerging" to "Frontier," a lower group that many big funds avoid. That shift could pull billions of dollars out of the market. The January warning alone wiped about US$80 billion off the value of the Jakarta stock exchange, already one of Asia's worst performers this year. MSCI also marked Indonesia down on the free flow of information, pointing to "opacity in shareholding structures," meaning it is often unclear who really owns the shares, and to signs of coordinated trading.

Indonesia is trying to fix this. It plans to double the share of a company's stock that must be freely traded, from 7.5 to 15 percent, to lower the level at which big owners must reveal themselves from 5 to 1 percent, and to turn the stock exchange into a normal shareholder-owned company. MSCI called these "a step in the right direction," but said what counts is steady follow-through. The pressure adds to a hard year: heavy government spending and a rupiah that has lost more than 14 percent under Prabowo.

Why it matters

If you invest, hold mutual funds, or have a pension linked to Indonesian shares, a downgrade could lower prices as foreign money leaves, so the November decision matters to your savings. It is also a report card on whether Indonesia's promised market reforms are real. Watch whether the government finishes the changes on time, or lets them slip.
